The latest assessment report AR6 of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, (IPCC) clearly highlights increases in frequency, intensity and severity of droughts and other extreme events that will have enormous pressure on food systems and nutrition problemsin vulnerable regions. Frequent incidences of drought in Jharkhand has increased the vulnerability,food insecurity and livelihood stress of communities. Untimely monsoon,reduced and erratic rainfall and temperature rise in recent decadeshas widely impacted food and water issues, agricultural production,health and hunger challenges at grassroots.

To address this pressing challenge and contributing to climate and no hunger goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), LGSS is working onstrengthening community-based adaptation and building resilience of communities in drought prone regions. Our interventions are oriented towards supporting the communities reduce drought risk, build adaptive capacity and resilience and improve overall quality of life of people.

Some of our recent projects include “Creating livelihood under drought-CLAD” implemented in drought prone district Palamu, Jharkhand.The programme covered about 1000 marginal farmers of Satbarwa in chronically drought prone Palamu district of Jharkhand. The project aimed at enhancing the resilience capacity of local community to combat climate change impacts and capacity building program to make the local institutions capable enough to adapt and continue drought resilient and hunger reducing measures. The organization has also been implementing and supporting projects/programmes relatedto drought proofing with a focus onland and water management,agriculture, natural resource management andlivelihood.
